One excellent way in controlling your heartburn problem is having a friendly heartburn diet. The types of foods and drinks you have in your current diet could be the heartburn triggers. Drinks form an important part of our diet. Yet, it is often overlooked.

Here are some types of drinks which you should avoid or reduce in consumption.

Carbonated beverages - Sodas are popular drinks and they provide a refreshing sensation while you consume it. Unfortunately, the gas from the drinks can contribute to your heartburn symptoms like burping and bloatness. It also puts more pressure on your stomach. As a result, the stomach produces too much stomach acid which may reflux into the esophagus causing you to have pain in the chest. You're advised to stay away from carbonated drinks which also contain caffeine, another heartburn trigger. In your case, drinking plain water will be the best solution to solve your heartburn problem.

Caffeinated drinks - If you are one of those coffee addicts who must have multiple cups a day, then this could be your major heartburn trigger. To most coffee lovers, asking them to give up their coffee passion is like taking their life away. If you are suffering from a severe heartburn problem, it is for your own health's sake that you eliminate this drink from your diet. If it is a mild heartburn problem, you can reduce it to 1 cup a day until you are well. Alternatively, you may want to try flower teas instead. They contain little or no caffeine and they provide a very refreshing smell and taste. Also, they are a much healthier choice compared to coffee.

Sports Drinks - Many people like to take sports drinks after their exercise. Often, they think that exercise is the one that causes them to have heartburn problem. Actually, it is the isotonic drinks. Most of these drinks are carbonated and contain caffeine. These 2 factors are major contributors to heartburn problems. The best choice is still plain water.

Milk - There is an old saying -- when you have an indigestion problem, drinking milk can help to soothe your stomach. For some, milk provides them a calming effect. But, for people who are suffering from acid reflux or heartburn problems, it is best not to include milk in your heartburn diet especially drinking it before going to sleep. When you are sleeping, the milk can make your stomach churn more acid, resulting in more acid reflux symptoms. It can give a painful heartburn experience. At night, if you wish to have some milk, it is good to drink it together with a high carbohydrate food like bread or plain biscuits. They help to speed up the digestion and reduce too much acid being produced. This means you will have a lower likelihood of suffering heartburn symptoms at night.

At this point, you may be thinking what drink should you include in your heartburn diet then? The answer is plain water. Drinking 8 cups of water everyday is good for your health and help you to reduce the acid level in your stomach. Once your body has recovered from heartburn, you can drink coffee and soda again but in limited quantity. For now, it is best to stick to your heartburn diet plan and avoid the above drinks totally.

Can heartburn pain vary in intensity?

Earlier this week, one of my wife's friends told her that she started having severe chest pains one evening earlier this month. She said that the chest pain was so bad that that she thought she was having a heart attack. She went to the Emergency Room, and the doctors ran a bunch of tests. Her heart was fine, and she was told that her chest pains was most likely "severe heartburn." My wife's friend, who's in her late 20s, never had heartburn before that night, and has had no problems since then either.

My wife and I were really surprised when her friend told us what happened. Both of us are in our early 30s, and we each get heartburn at least a few times each year since we've been in our mid 20s. Neither one of us have ever had heartburn pain so bad that we thought that it could be something more serious. On the flip side, neither of us have ever had a "mild" case of heartburn where the pain is not as bad as it usually is.

Is it possible for heartburn pain to vary in intensity? Can the pain ever be so severe that it could be mistaken for a heart attack? Are there any factors that can cause the pain to be particularly severe?

Millions of people all over the world are looking to find help for acid reflux. However, Americans may have a more dense population of sufferers because of the foods we eat. If you are hoping to cure your heartburn I have some good news for you. It can be done but it will take some effort on your part. You will not be able to just pop a pill and cover up the problem.

What is acid reflux? We tend to call it heartburn or acid indigestion and it causes a burning sensation coupled with uncomfortable pain behind the breastplate. You may also have a shortness of breath along with nausea, gas and bloating. What happens is that when your stomach produces hydrochloric acid, to help in the digesting of the food you eat, it backs up past the lower esophagus sphincter muscle irritating the sensitive lining of the esophagus.

What Causes Acid Reflux? If you suffer from frequent episodes of heartburn you may have what is called a hiatal hernia which adds pressure forcing the acid up to your esophagus. When you eat to much of certain foods you can have frequent bouts with reflux as well. Foods that are highly acidic like citrus fruits and tomatoes can cause symptoms. Very spicy food and greasy foods like french fries can reek havoc on your digestive system.

What Can you do about it? First if you find that you are having daily problems or are having a hard time finding relief you should see you health care professional for a proper diagnosis. Acid reflux can be a very dangerous condition and should be treated as one. If you keep a close eye on what you eat that causes your burning sensation you can begin to regulate our diet to avoid those types of food. Try to include more raw veggies with your meals and try to eat smaller meals more often. Eating 5 to 6 smaller meals a day will not only help your stomach to digest its food better but will also help you to maintain a normal weight which is essential in order to cure your heartburn.

If you would like to find more help for acid reflux there is some great information available.

Take a look at my website at http://acidreflux-remedies.com and I will show you where to get an e-book that will teach you to cure your acid reflux naturally and for good.

Acid Reflux Chokes Me Awake At Night
by: Drew Harris

Acid reflux has forced me to suddenly wake up countless times, in a state of panic, choking on my own acid and gasping for breath.

Nothing can really describe the burning bile feeling, or the taste it leaves in your mouth as you try not to gag and throw-up. I have had to stick a pinch of toothpaste into my mouth and leave it there to try and cut the bile taste.

I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia as a teenager, which may contribute to acid reflux. The burning acid had left me alone for most of my 20’s. However, a high stress job and a subsequent gain in weight and lack of exercise brought the acid reflux back on with a vengeance in my 30’s.

When I started having almost constant waves of heartburn and acid indigestion, sitting upright at my desk, I knew it was time to see the doctor.

At that time, I had never heard of acid reflux.

He told me that more than 60 million people suffer from frequent heartburn, acid indigestion or GERD (Gastroesophogeal Reflux Disease).

Acid reflux describes the regurgitation of acid back up the throat. It can also lead to more serious medical conditions that may require hospitalization.

My doctor explained this happens when the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) does not close properly and stomach contents leak back, or reflux, into the esophagus. The LES is a ring of muscle at the bottom of the esophagus that acts like a valve between the esophagus and stomach. The esophagus carries food from the mouth to the stomach.

When refluxed stomach acid touches the lining of the esophagus, it causes a burning sensation in the chest or throat called heartburn. The fluid may even be tasted in the back of the mouth, which is called acid indigestion.

Heartburn that occurs more than twice a week may be considered GERD, and it can eventually lead to more serious health problems.

When I finally went and saw my doctor, I was having almost constant heartburn and acid indigestion.

He further explained that symptoms are usually worse at night when the person is lying flat and acid flows easily from the stomach back up the esophagus.

Anyone, including infants, children, and pregnant women, can have GERD.

I was told to make some lifestyle and dietary changes. They included:

1. Using a wedge pillow to elevate my body at bedtime

2. Eating plenty of fiber and drinking lots of fluids.

3. Eating small meals and eating slowly.

4. Not lying down for at least 1-2 hours after eating.

5. Losing extra pounds. Added weight causes extra pressure on your stomach and can irritate symptoms.

6. Wearing loose clothing. Tightly fitting clothes put extra pressure on your stomach.

7. Not exercising for at least one hour after eating.

8. Avoiding the following: alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, chocolate, carbonated beverages, spices, fried and fatty foods, tomato products, citrus, and peppermint.

I am a non smoker and I don’t drink that much. I do drink a fair bit of coffee however. The real culprit for me though has been drinking fruit juice of any kind before bed. When I have, my acid reflux has been significantly worse.

As I have made many of these changes to my lifestyle, I have seen some relief.

The elevated pillow works wonderfully. I have also started taking proton pump inhibitor medication, which reduces acid production in my stomach. I have been told surgery may be an option down the road.

According to a recent survey, Americans and other westerners suffer from heartburn symptoms more often than people from Asian and eastern countries. Every day people buy hundreds of antacids and other over the counter remedies to stop heartburn. It may not be easy to try to change habits that lead to heartburn symptoms, but it could be worth the effort. Heartburn symptoms experienced once or more per week may need to be evaluated by a physician, particularly if you try to make changes in your eating habits and the heartburn persists.

You may be able to stop heartburn symptoms by eating smaller meals more frequently. This technique is also recommended for those who have problems with their weight. Regular exercise is also a good idea. Obese and overweight people have more heartburn symptoms than those who are not overweight. The extra pounds put more pressure on the stomach, causing the stomach acid to leak up into the esophagus. It is this flowing back of the stomach acid that is referred to in medical terminology as acid reflux. Stomach acid in the esophagus causes the burning sensation, which is one of the primary heartburn symptoms. The acid can eventually erode the lining of the esophagus. Efforts to stop heartburn or relieve heartburn symptoms include neutralizing the stomach acid, soothing the throat and/or relieving the gas. But, it is important to make efforts to stop heartburn from happening in the first place.

Anxiety and stress lead to heartburn symptoms in many people. Some people experience heartburn symptoms for the first time during an unusually stressful period in their lives. The stomach produces more acid during these times. Some people have been able to stop heartburn by addressing the anxiety and stress. Meditation, deep muscle relaxation, as well as anti-anxiety medications have reduced the number of heartburn symptoms experienced in some cases. Anxiety can be serious and is sometimes accompanied by depression, which can be very serious. It is best not to ignore frequent symptoms of anxiety, just as it is important not to ignore frequent heartburn symptoms.

It may be possible to stop heartburn symptoms naturally by watching what you eat or making lifestyle changes. Spicy and fried foods often lead to heartburn. But most people experience heartburn occasionally. Big holiday meals are common culprits. If you don’t like the chalky taste of antacids, there are drops available that include fennel and mint oils and provide relief from occasional heartburn symptoms.

How to Relieve severe heartburn/indigestion 38 weeks pregnancy?

I am 38 weeks. I am in pre-labor meaning baby is engaged, cervix is softening, and I have been getting a lot of contractions. However, over the past several days my heartburn and indigestion has completely worsened. My tongue has an acid-bitter taste, my mouth has this taste too no mater what I do it doesn't go away after I eat, I have chest/throat pain, burning, belching, etc... I eat lightly and small. My husband made quesidillas tonight and I had one with beans and salsa and it has given me the worse heartburn I've ever had. I usually take rantidine 75 mg, but since being pregnant I've not taken anything. I have a history of digestion problems including gallbladder surgery when I was 10 weeks along! I just can't take this burning anymore. I haven't had so much digestion issues since my gallbladder was removed in March.

Please what can I do? I've tried water, resting, moving around, taking my mind off of it (very hard to even do), but it still persists. It has been 6-7 hours since I last ate! Worse is the heartburn bothers my asthma and stirs it up. I am burping acid as well. Just very uncomfortable tonight with this issue.

Non Medicinal Cures for Heartburn?
I'm looking for ways to prevent it or stop it once it starts. If you don't know, acid reflux or heartburn is when stomach acid splashes into your esophagus which causes pain. Also, I'm wondering what causes the acid to splash up.

If you are living with persistent heartburn, you may consider it to be only a mild irritation, barely above notice in your day to day life. Once you begin to feel the painful burning typically associated with acid reflux, you start thinking more and you begin to avoid the foods that cause heartburn.

No big deal, right? After all, what could possibly occur as a result of a little acid indigestion?

Our stomachs were made to be able to handle extremely high levels of acid. In fact, without such high levels, our bodies would not be able to properly digest the foods we eat into the nutrients and minerals we need in order to survive. The delicate lining of our esophagus, however, was never meant to be able to handle such harsh conditions.

If you experience acid indigestion more than once or twice at week, the acid from your stomach can actually begin to erode the lining of your esophagus. When this occurs this condition is known as erosive esophagitis. People that have esophagitis are much more likely to develop more serious conditions such as esophageal cancer or Barrett's esophagus.

Esophageal cancer is a particularly deadly form of cancer. Treatment is difficult and often results in the patient not being able to eat and swallow properly. Barrett's esophagus occurs when cells that typically are found in the intestines start to grow in the esophagus. Many people who develop Barrett's esophagus eventually develop esophageal cancer.

Living with persistent heartburn is not simply a minor inconvenience, but potentially a life altering disease. Taking over-the-counter, and even prescription drugs, merely mask the symptoms. As such, many people are turning to natural heartburn remedies with amazing results.

Reduce Acid Reflux or Heartburn by Strengthening the LES Valve
by: Rudy Silva

Heartburn and acid reflux are typically treated with over the counter products or drugs that reduce stomach acid or block the excretion of stomach acid. It would appear that if our stomach acid needed to be diluted by antacids, our body would be smart enough not produce such a corrosive liquid in our stomach.

That fact is that we need a highly acidic condition in our stomach to properly digest protein. Using drugs to suppress this stomach acid is not the correct way to deal with acid reflux or heartburn. If you do go this route, you will be facing many disease as you get older.

There are many reasons you might have acid reflux. One reason is a weakness in the Lower Esophageal Sphincter valve, LES. LES is a valve between your stomach and your esophagus. When your LES valve is weak, it can allow acidified, partially digested food to flow back up into your esophagus. The acid in the food will burn the lining of your esophagus causing the so called "heartburn..."

Here are some natural steps that you can use to strengthen your Lower Esophageal Sphincter valve:

These foods can weaken the LES valve - coffee, peppermint, spearmint, sugar, chocolate, onions, and alcohol. Once you have strengthened your LES, you can return to eating these foods in moderate amounts.

Eliminate those foods that are known to create allergic reactions such as cow's milk, wheat, white flour, diary products, and other foods.

Avoid overeating and having a large amount of food in your stomach. Excess food in your stomach can increase your stomach gas pressure and force your LES valve to open.

Avoid using certain drugs, although this might be impossible. If you take drugs perhaps you can start looking for and start using some natural remedies so that you can lessen the use of drugs. Here are some of the drugs at cause LES problems - NSAID's, bronchodilators, channel blockers, beta-blockers, antianxiety drugs, and nitroglycerine. These drugs relax the muscles around the LES valve causing them to open during normal stomach gas pressures.

Watch how you do certain physical activities, such as waist bending, staining during bowel movements, coughing, and lifting heavy objects. This increases the pressure in the stomach, causing the LES valve to open.

After a meal do not lie down. This causes food to flow back towards the LES valve putting pressure on it. So it is a good reason to eat your last meal around three hours before bedtime.

There you have it, some natural remedies and activities that strengthen or weaken your LES valve. Just applying some or all these will result in reducing the frequency of your acid reflux and heartburn.
